ADVANCED DESERT/TUNDRA SURVIVAL COURSE

The Bisti Badlands sit at the bottom of the Colorado Rockies, where temperatures can drop to 6 degrees Fahrenheit, and the desert becomes punishing. This is our advanced course.

Snowstorm Survival

Set up a campsite in one of the coldest conditions you have ever faced in the De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area, New Mexico. This course is designed for field research professionals, those whom have already gained wilderness medicine experience, or archaeological students seeking a more in depth approach to wilderness survival techniques in the field. Our Advanced Desert/Tundra Survival course will incorporate WSI and DRT skillsets, while providing a challenging course destination and climate. Students will spend three days of instruction and practical application of wilderness survival skills while traveling from the White Sands National Park to the Bisti Badlands.

*This is the hardest course offered. Please view our DRT course for more information on Wilderness Emergency Medicine classes if you have not already.*

Technical Wilderness Skills

This course is designed to prepare outdoor professionals for some of the harshest environments researchers work in. Upon completion students will receive an Advanced Desert & Tundra Survival certification that does not require recertification.

  • Learn how to set up camp in the extreme cold while sleeping in a fire-ban zone.

  • Engage in practical rescue skills instructed by certified Wilderness First Responders & Wilderness Survival Instructors.

  • Understand crucial techniques to survive solo and with a large team.

  • Adapt to a changing desert environment that can have highs of 80 Fahrenheit during the day with unrelenting snowfall through the night.
