Southeast Office and Maritime Conservation Laboratory Relocation

We have moved to Winterville, North Carolina!

Since our last project in March when the waters were just starting to warm up, we have been busy with artifact curation and the relocation of our main office where the Southeast Maritime Conservation Laboratory is situated. Not only did the move allow us to bring in new equipment, but the Maritime Conservation Lab has been completely overhauled allowing us to expand the scope of geophysical research and in-house sedimentology.

As the temperature starts to cool down, we look to our next project coming up this month in Charleston, South Carolina, where we will resume the Phase I geophysical survey from this past March. This will include a dive to dissect sediment cores for sampling periods of marine-transgression and a later Phase II retrieval. This project will be in part of a larger initiative next year to ground-truth for potential coastal prehistoric sites and paleolandscapes that may be correlated to these local assemblages.

For the time being, we are still working on gathering new laboratory equipment together for artifact analysis, including spectrophotometry, trinocular compound microscopy, and high-temperature diffusion cloud chamber detection for ionizing radiation. Along with the laboratory expansion, we will be bringing new staff onboard for the fourth quarter this fall to assist with geophysical surveys and artifact conservation. We hope to see you out there!
