Winter Artifact Recovery

With winter just around the corner, the water temperatures are cooling down in the Southeast and we are gearing up for our next project along the South Carolina coast. This time we will be starting Phase 1 surveys using acoustic dual beam sonar scanning paired with QGIS Field Maps to precisely locate submerged archaeological sites along the Ashley River in Charleston. We will be using probability sampling and the acoustic data will provide insight into higher probability zones that will transition into a Phase 2 recovery. This is a great opportunity for new divers, students, and archaeologists interested in maritime methodology to get hands on experience in the water using sonar and orienteering with GPS. Our beach team will be monitoring live data from the shore to aid our Artifact Recovery Dive Team in their search for submerged prehistoric and historic cultural material.

Phase 2 will be conducted shortly after a site map is created in QGIS, and we will dive each submerged site to recover the archaeological material below the surface. Our organization is actively recruiting new divers, staff archaeologists, and we welcome current students to join our upcoming projects for those interested in maritime fieldwork. Send us an email at sicparvismagnaarchaeology.com, or reach out to someone on the dive team to secure a spot for our winter artifact recoveries this season.

We hope to see you out there!
